Book description:

A NEW AGE HAS DAWNED. AN AGE OF BLOOD AND STEEL.
AN AGE OF WRATH.

The land of Ascarlia, a fabled realm of bloodied steel and epic sagas, has been ruled by the Sister Queens for centuries. No one has dared question their rule.

Until now.

Whispers speak of longships of mysterious tattooed warriors, sailing under the banners of a murderous cult of oath-breakers long thought extinct. A tide of black steel that threatens to vanquish all in its path.

Thera of the Blackspear, favoured servant of the Sister Queens, is ordered to uncover the truth. As Thera sails north, her reviled brother, Felnir, sets out on his own adventure. He hopes to find the Vault of the Altvar – the treasure room of the gods – and win the Sister Queens’ favour at his sister’s expense.

Both siblings – along with a brilliant young scribe and a prisoner with a terrifying, primal power – will play a part in the coming storm.

The Age of Wrath has begun.

A Tide of Black Steel begins a new blockbuster epic fantasy series from international bestseller Anthony Ryan, whose books have sold more than a million copies worldwide.

In other news, the UK paperback edition of The Traitor, Book Three of The Covenant of Steel, will be released on April 18th. As usual, I’ll be running a signed copies giveaway for subscribers to my mailing list a week before release. Sign up here if you want to have a chance of winning.

I’m pleased to announce that my new novel A Tide of Black Steel will be released by Orbit in September 2024. This is the first volume in an all new trilogy entitled The Age of Wrath. Here’s the description:

Keen-eyed readers will no doubt have spotted that this book takes place in the same world as The Covenant of Steel trilogy. The story begins twenty years after the events in The Traitor, however, whilst it contains some references to prior events, the Age of Wrath series can be read in isolation. But if anyone is minded to read The Covenant of Steel in preparation, I’m certainly not going to complain.

The cover isn’t yet ready to be unveiled – watch this space – but by way of a consolation prize, here’s the map:

Upcoming Xmas Giveaway and New Interview

I’ll be running a mailing list giveaway for signed hardcovers of The Traitor and Across the Sorrow Sea from December 18th to 24th. I had hoped to run the AtSS giveaway in concert with the novella’s release but my author copies took a while to arrive. If you missed out on the special editions from Subterranean Press, this is a chance to win a signed copy with a personalised dedication. To ensure you get a chance to enter join the mailing list before the 18th and don’t forget to check your spam folders for the giveaway email.

In other news – many thanks to Eleni Argyró Efstratiadou for interviewing me on the Before We Go blog. You can read the full interview here, which goes into the writing of Red River Seven and the Covenant of Steel, as well as a hint as to what’s next. I know many of you are keen for news about my next series, so watch out for a much more detailed announcement early in the new year. In the meantime, a merry Chrismakkuhfestivus / happy new year to one and all.

About the book:

Internationally bestselling fantasy author Anthony Ryan – writing as A. J. Ryan – delivers a nerve-shredding thriller in which seven strangers must undertake a terrifying journey into the unknown.

A man awakes on a boat at sea with no memory of who he is or how he came to be there. He’s not alone – there are six others. None of them can remember their names, but all bear the scars of recent surgery.

When a message appears on the onboard computer – Proceeding to Point A – the group agrees to work together to survive whatever is coming.

But as the boat moves through the mist-shrouded waters, divisions begin to form, and the group is plagued by questions. Who is directing them, why have they lost their memories, and what are the screams they can hear beyond the mist?

“With thoughtful characterization and an innovative variation on a familiar theme, this impressive horror tale wows.” — Publishers Weekly Starred Review

“With well drawn characters, an engrossing story, and a spectacular finale, this one is a triumph.” — Booklist

“A. J. Ryan’s RED RIVER SEVEN bursts onto the page like a riveting ride into a monstrous heart of darkness, starting out as a locked-room mystery and steadily stomping the gas to become an edge-of-your seat apocalyptic thriller. Gripping, fast-paced, and bloody good fun.” — Craig DiLouie, author of Episode Thirteen

“Parts Josh Malerman’s Bird Box and Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later, RRS is a frenetically paced, galvanizing read that will equally excite and terrify you. Absolute recommend.” — FanFiAddict

Bird Box meets World War Z in the genre-bending Red River Seven, a madly entertaining amalgam of locked-room mystery, heart-racing thriller, and terror-inducing horror show that will keep you up late into the night and darken your dreams long after you turn the last page.” – Philip Fracassi, author of Boys in the Valley

“[A] non-stop action ride.” – Grimdark Magazine

Description:

The New York Times bestselling Raven’s Shadow Trilogy was a perfect read for “fans of broadscale epic fantasy along the lines of Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series and George R. R. Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire novels.”* Now, Anthony Ryan begins a new saga, The Draconis Memoria…

Throughout the vast lands controlled by the Ironship Syndicate, nothing is more prized than the blood of drakes. Harvested from the veins of captive or hunted Reds, Green, Blues and Blacks, it can be distilled into elixirs that give fearsome powers to the rare men and women who have the ability harness them—known as the blood-blessed.

But not many know the truth: that the lines of drakes are weakening. If they fail, war with the neighboring Corvantine Empire will follow swiftly. The Syndicate’s last hope resides in whispers of the existence of another breed of drake, far more powerful than the rest, and the few who have been chosen by fate to seek it.

Claydon Torcreek is a petty thief and an unregistered blood-blessed, who finds himself pressed into service by the protectorate and sent to wild, uncharted territories in search of a creature he believes is little more than legend. Lizanne Lethridge is a formidable spy and assassin, facing gravest danger on an espionage mission deep into the heart of enemy territory. And Corrick Hilemore is the second lieutenant of an ironship, whose pursuit of ruthless brigands leads him to a far greater threat at the edge of the world.

As lives and empires clash and intertwine, as the unknown and the known collide, all three must fight to turn the tide of a coming war, or drown in its wake.

‘Masterful… Ryan’s thoughtful characterizations and complex plotting are on clear display… Sends the series out on a high note.’ – Publishers Weekly Starred Review of The Traitor.

The Traitor concludes the ruthless and gripping epic fantasy series from New York Times bestseller Anthony Ryan, whose books have sold more than a million copies worldwide.

It’s been a long journey for Alwyn Scribe. Born a bastard and raised an outlaw, he’s now a knight and the most trusted advisor to Lady Evadine Courlain. Together they’ve won countless battles and helped to bring order to a fractured kingdom.

Yet Evadine is not the woman Alwyn once knew. As puritanical fury increasingly replaces her benevolent faith, Alwyn begins to question what her true motives really are.

As the kingdom braces itself for one final battle, Alwyn’s conscience fights its own war with his heart. Now, more than ever, he must decide whose side he’s really on.

Many thanks to everyone at Orbit Books for their hard work in bringing the tale of Alwyn Scribe to its conclusion.

Now, on to the next thing…
